Coelastrella is a single-celled green microalga. In culture, UPS-1 cells are ellipsoidal to ovoid and bright green, with a distinct chloroplast, and are only a few micrometres long. The cells are non-motile and occur singly, as in the light micrograph shown here (scale bar 10 µm).
The genus is known for rapid photoautotrophic growth and for accumulating lipids and secondary carotenoids when nutrients become limiting. Those traits have drawn interest for biomass and natural-pigment research, carbon capture, and nutrient removal from wastewater. Compact cells and simple culture requirements make Coelastrella a practical organism for both laboratory study and scaled cultivation.
Coelastrella is also being examined as a sustainable feedstock. Its ability to build carbon-rich biomass with relatively little land or freshwater demand, together with a protein- and pigment-rich cell, keeps the group in view for functional ingredients and bio-based materials.
This site provides the genome resource for Coelastrella sp. UPS-1, including assembly statistics, a genome browser, sequence retrieval, and BLAST. It is intended to support gene discovery and comparative work on green microalgae.
